The Expressive Portrait Reviewed: April 2019
(4-day week with a rest day in the middle)
Everyone engaged fully with the spirit of this course, which was all about exploring personal responses to contemporary portrait sculpture. Conversation was lively and enquiring – but mostly confined to much needed breaks from the intensity of the sittings. Focus and application were the order of the day and our excellent sitter, Mark, rose to the occasion with his usual rigorous professionalism.
To keep things fresh I introduced a new set of reference images and a quote each day. The quote that stays with me is by the Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzu: “I don’t believe in inspiration. I believe in work, because while one works one’s creativity is opened”.
